JFK-Pisa Flight Will Boost Tourism to Napoleon’s Island

The Italian island of Elba will become much more accessible to US holidaymakers this summer following the introduction of direct flights from New York to Pisa.

Delta Air Lines is offering different flights a week from New York’s JFK Airport to Pisa .. The new transatlantic service has been warmly welcomed by Maurizio Testa who runs the VisitElba website (www.visitelba.com) and is also owner and manager of Hotel Ilio (www.ilio.it), one of the most charming boutique hotels on the island. He said: “We’ve had quite a lot of American guests staying with us, but up until now it’s not been the easiest journey. This is a major commitment by Delta Air Lines which will help open up the whole of Tuscany to the American market.” He suggested Elba would fit in well as part of a general tour of Tuscany . “Of course American visitors will be interested in some of the famous Tuscan cities including Florence, Pisa and Siena, but as the principal island of Tuscany, Elba offers a totally different ambience and is a good place to come and relax after the hustle and bustle of the cities.”

Elba is Italy’s third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia with a population of only 35,000, and lies within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Getting from the Italian mainland to Elba could not be easier with regular sailings from the port of Piombino to Elba’s capital, Portoferraio. Both ferry sailings and car rental can now be booked on-line on www.VisitElba.com. The island’s airport is located in Marina di Campo and has regular scheduled flights from Pisa, Milan Malpensa, Florence, MIlano Orio , Munich, Zurich and Bern. Elba offers a temperate climate with winter temperatures rarely dipping below 10˚ C and peak summer temperatures averaging 22-24˚ C, and the main tourist season runs from April to October.

The Boutique Hotel Ilio in Capo Sant Andra, on the unspoilt north-west of the island, has 20 rooms, all located just steps from the beach and named after Mediterranean scents: Pomegranate, Lemon, Geranium…like the plants dedicated to them. The hotel offers trekking, botanical tours, bird watching, mountain biking, bike rentals, climbing, horse trekking, tennis, 9-hole golf, snorkeling, diving, sea kayaking, windsurfing and boat hire.
